I recently read an article in the August issue of Landscape Management entitled Are You Ready to Sell? Ths article, written by Erin Hollis of International Profit Associates, Inc. This short article has thought-provoking comments for anyone thinking about selling a business.

One of the things in the article I think is very important for sellers to understand is that a buyer is likely looking for a return in the 30% range from buying a business. That level of return compensates for the much higher risk associated with buying a business versus an alternative investment such as a mutual fund.

Another is that a buyer will be looking for systems in place which will help ensure the business can sustain its profitability in the future.
